A Hidden Testicle That Became a Groin Mass

Cryptorchidism is a developmental condition in which one or both testicles fail to descend normally into the scrotum. In this patient, the retained testicle was located in the inguinal region and had become markedly enlarged, presenting externally as a prominent groin mass.

Retained testicles are exposed to a higher internal temperature than normally descended testicles. Over time, this can increase the risk of testicular degeneration, torsion, abnormal enlargement, and neoplastic changes. Because the affected testicle may resemble a soft-tissue mass, proper physical examination and diagnostic assessment are important before surgical treatment.

The enlarged inguinal cryptorchid testis was carefully isolated from the surrounding tissues, its vascular structures were securely ligated, and the abnormal tissue was completely excised. The patient remained stable throughout the procedure and recovered well during postoperative monitoring.

Pet owners should have any unusual swelling in the groin, lower abdomen, or scrotal area examined—especially when one or both testicles are not visibly present in the scrotum. Early identification and surgical removal of a retained testicle can help prevent future complications.
