Clinical Considerations

Obesity is the most prevalent nutritional disease in veterinary clinics, characterized by a positive energy balance condition, in which consumption exceeds expenditure, with lipid reserve stored in the form of triglycerides in adipose tissue and various deleterious effects for health. Its etiology is multifactorial and includes inadequate diet such as homemade food and snacks in excess, genetic factors, sedentary lifestyle, castration, endocrinopathies (hyperadrenocorticism, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus), use of glucocorticoids, progestagens, anticonvulsants, etc.

There are 2 types of obesity: Hypertrophic and Hyperplastic, being that hypertrophic obesity is characterized by an increase in the size of adipocytes, and hyperplastic obesity is characterized by an increase in the number and size of adipocytes.

It is important to assess whether the animal is overweight, obese, or pronounced obese. Overweight is when the animal is 1% to 14% above the ideal weight; obese, 15% to 30% above the ideal weight, in pronounced obesity the animal should be above 30%. Overweight animals can consume Equilibrio Light, but in the case of obesity and pronounced obesity, the ideal food is Equilibrio Veterinary Obesity & Diabetic Dogs – O&D.

Balance Veterinary Obesity & Diabetic Dogs – O&D presents in its composition low energy content, which helps in the control of excess body fat; high content of soluble fibers (beet pulp and inulin) and insoluble fibers (cellulose powder and psyllium) promoting animal satiety, thus reducing calorie consumption and maintaining the health of the gastrointestinal tract. Soluble fibers slow down gastric emptying and control nutrient absorption. Insoluble fibers increase the volume of food and speed up gastrointestinal transit.

30% protein is considered ideal for maintaining lean mass.

The high concentration of L-carnitine in the product Balance Veterinary Obesity & Diabetic Dogs – O&D accelerates fat burning and also helps maintain lean mass.

The use of natural antioxidants, such as Vitamin E, C, D, and beta carotene, fights free radicals, and prevents early cell aging.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids help reduce serum triglyceride levels and increase insulin sensitivity.

The mineral chromium is very important for diabetic animals, as it is considered a facilitator for the entry of glucose into the cell and thus regulates glycemic indexes.
