Q: Do you have a 5n1 (5-in-1) vaccine?

The DHPPi/L vaccine, also known as the 5n1 or 5-in-1 vaccine, is a vaccine for dogs. It is named 5n1 because it can prevent 5 illnesses with 1 injection. D means distemper virus; H means hepatitis from adenovirus; P means parvovirus; PI means parainfluenza virus, which can cause kennel cough; and L means Leptospira.

But modern veterinary practice now groups vaccines by strains, not by diseases that the vaccine can protect against. Because of new strains in the vaccines, the 5n1 has changed into 6n1 (or 6-in-1) and 8n1 (8-in-1). We no longer sell 5n1 vaccines but 6n1 and 8n1 dog vaccines.

Q: How much is your 5n1 (5-in-1) vaccine?

We don’t have a price for the 5n1 (5-in-1) dog vaccine because we now classify it as either 6n1 (or 6-in-1) and 8n1 (8-in-1) dog vaccines.

Q: What are the dog vaccines being used and their prices?

Our DHPPi/L vaccines are now identified as either Dog 6n1 or Dog 8n1.

Q: What makes your 8n1 vaccine as either regular or special?

We offer two variants of the 8-in-1 vaccine for dogs: the regular Dog 8n1 (Nobivac DHPPi+L4) and the special Dog 8n1 (Biocan Novel DHPPi+L4). The primary distinction between the two lies in the parvovirus strains they employ. The Nobivac vaccine utilizes Strain 154, derived from an older parvovirus, while the Biocan Novel vaccine incorporates CPV-2b, a more recent parvovirus strain. Both vaccines assert protection against the latest parvovirus strain, CPV-2c. However, the Biocan Novel vaccine commands a higher price due to its utilization of the most recent parvovirus strain.

Q: What are the costs for dewormers?

Our “in-house” dewormer, a clinic combination of pyrantel and praziquantel, is a suspension priced at P95 for pets weighing less than 10kg. If the weight exceeds 10kg, the cost becomes P100 per kilogram of body weight.

The “take-home” dewormers are outlined below:
1. Wormguard (pyrantel + febantel + praziquantel): Priced at Php 150 per tablet, with a recommended dosage of half a tablet for every 5 kg of body weight.
2. Vermicide (pyrantel) 15mL bottle: This suspension is available at Php 200 per bottle, with a recommended dosage of approximately 0.6 mL per 1 kg of body weight.
3. Prazinate (pyrantel + praziquantel) 15mL bottle: This suspension is available at Php 300 per bottle, with a recommended dosage of approximately 0.7 mL per 1 kg of body weight.

Q: What is the cost for heartworm prevention?

For heartworm prevention, we have Wormectin® tablet at Php 160 per piece. Dosage is 1/4 tab for every 10 kilograms in weight. It is to be given once a month.

Q: Why is there a 5n1, 6n1, 7n1 or 8n1 vaccines in the market?

DHLPPi/L vaccines were originally referred to as “5n1 vaccines” in the veterinary field, providing protection against five diseases: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospira, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza.

In contemporary veterinary practices, the classification of these vaccines has shifted to focus on the strains they contain rather than the number of diseases they protect against. For instance, our 6n1 vaccine encompasses six strains, including one each of Distemper virus, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza virus, along with two strains of Leptospira.

Similarly, our 8n1 vaccine comprises eight strains: one each of Distemper virus, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza virus, and four strains of Leptospira. Current practices often categorize vaccines based on the number of strains, representing the types of viruses or bacteria included in a single shot.

In technical terms, whether it’s a 6n1, 7n1, or 8n1 vaccine, they are essentially “5n1 vaccines” when considering the number of diseases they provide protection against.

Q: What is the difference between a single and 2n1 kennel cough vaccine?

Our SINGLE kennel cough vaccine contains Bordetella bronchiseptica only.
Our 2n1 kennel cough vaccine contains both Bordetella bronchiseptica & canine Parainfluenza virus.

Q: What if I start late but my puppy is still less than 18 weeks of age?

Your puppy will still be given a series of DHLPPi shots at a 1-month interval with the last shot given at or >18 weeks of age.
For example, if you started your pup at 10 weeks of age, this would be the schedule for your pup:
• 10 weeks – 1st DHLPPi
• 14 weeks – 2nd DHLPPi
• 18 weeks – last DHLPPi

Q: What if I start late but my kitten is still less than 16 weeks of age?

Your kitten will still be given a series of PCH shots at a 1-month interval with the last shot given at or >16 weeks of age.
For example, if you started your kitten at 10 weeks of age, this would be the schedule for your kitten:
• 10 weeks – 1st PCH
• 14 weeks – 2nd PCH
• 18 weeks – last PCH

Q: What if I start too late with my puppy or kitten at or above 16 weeks of age?

Your puppy or kitten would only need 2 shots (DHLPPi or PCH) on a 1-month interval.

Q: Can I avail of a rabies shot at less than 12 weeks of age?

No. Three (3) months is the global recommendation for minimum age for rabies vaccination. Any rabies shot given less than 3 months (or 12 weeks) of age would be considered invalid in most countries and would result to prohibition of entry or travel for your pet.

Q: What is the best interval between puppy 5n1 shots - 2 weeks or 4 weeks?

Globally, the recommended interval is 3 to 4 weeks, not 2 weeks which is an old protocol. Here at AVCI, we are following the 4-week (or 1-month) interval for a reason. To start your puppy at 6 weeks of age and end at the optimal age of 18 weeks, a 4-week interval will deliver only 4 shots (6th, 10th, 14th, 18th) while a 3-week interval will have to deliver 5 shots (6th, 9th, 12th, 15th, 18th). Lesser shots mean lesser puncture pain for your pet.

Q: Why is deworming repeated?

A wormer only kills the adult and larval stages of worms but not the eggs. A wormer is only effective on the day it is given. It does not confer extended protection. It is repeated to eliminate worms that were recently hatched.

Q: Should pets not be given a bath after vaccination?

This traditional advice suggests that bathing your pet after vaccination could cause stress and potentially compromise the effectiveness of the vaccination. However, there is no evidence supporting this claim. The stress induced by bathing is not significant enough to suppress the immune system. It’s important to note that it is the diseases themselves that can compromise the immune system, which is why vaccinations are not administered to unhealthy pets. In summary, there is no harm in giving your pets a bath after vaccination.

Q: Can I walk my pets after the 1st or 2nd vaccination?

Kindly refrain from exposing your pet to the external environment or other animals after the initial or second DHLPPi (or PCH) vaccinations, as the protection provided during this period is insufficient. It is advisable to wait for a minimum of two weeks after the last DHLPPi (or PCH) shot before allowing such exposures.

Q: Can we give both DHLPPi and rabies vaccines simultaneously?

Yes, we can. There is even a vaccine preparation combining both DHLPPi and rabies. One such commercial vaccine is Biocan Novel DHPPI/L4R.

Q: Is there a doctor's or consultation fee for every deworming or vaccination?

When you bring your pet to AVCI for vaccination or immunization, there are no charges for additional fees such as service fee, doctor’s fee, vet’s fee, consultation fee or professional fee (PF). We do not impose any service fees for such activity. You only pay for the cost of the vaccine or the wormer.

Q: If I forgot to avail of my pet's 2nd or 3rd DHLPPi (or PCH) shot, do we restart or go back to the 1st shot?

There is no need to restart. We just continue with the remaining DHLPPi (or PCH) shots.
