It Looked Like a Bloody Ear—Until We Cleaned the Wound

This dog was brought to AVCI with blood-soaked fur around the ear. At first, the full extent of the injury was difficult to see.
After careful cleaning and assessment, myiasis was discovered—a condition in which flies lay eggs on an open wound, which later hatch into maggots.
The patient received the necessary wound treatment and surgery because part of the ear flap was already severely damaged.
Wounds can sometimes appear smaller on the surface, especially when covered by fur, blood, or discharge. Flies may also be attracted to moist or exposed tissue, allowing the condition to progress quickly.
This case is a reminder that proper cleaning and veterinary assessment can reveal problems that may not be immediately visible. Early treatment can help prevent further damage and support better healing.
