Clinical Considerations

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is observed with great frequency among dogs, mainly in elderly animals, although young dogs can also present the condition, mainly those with inherited or congenital disease. The acquired etiology of CKD includes several etiological agents, the main ones being infectious, toxic, ischemic, immune-mediated, etc. Once present, the kidney injury can evolve without the presence of the etiological agent that caused the process, and thus the gradual loss of kidney function occurs. There are several functions performed by the kidneys and that preserve homeostasis. Renal dysfunction can be detected by laboratory analysis abnormalities and clinical manifestations resulting from fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base imbalance. Usually, laboratory test abnormalities are detected earlier than clinical manifestations.

The main objectives of dietary therapy are based on the supply of daily energy needs, the control of azotemia, the control of secondary renal hyperparathyroidism, the correction of electrolyte imbalances and vitamin B deficiency, and the need for supplementation of fatty acids with less potent inflammatory action and antiplatelet aggregation (omega-3). Balance Veterinary Renal Dog – RE presents in its composition ingredients to help and reduce the signs of the disease, for example, prebiotics that contribute as a source of fermentable carbohydrates for gastrointestinal bacteria, which use urea as a source of nitrogen for their growth, which suggests a potential beneficial effect, by increasing fecal nitrogen, and less absorption into the bloodstream.

Furthermore, they can help regulate digestive disorders that occur mainly in the final stages of CKD. The ingredients are inadequate levels to meet the specific needs of dogs with CKD, in addition to having high palatability, since many animals attacked have capricious appetites and/or anorexia.

Clinical Considerations

Among the main challenges of veterinary medicine the physiological and metabolic disturbances involving the liver stand out. Liver disease is often complicated by inappetence that promotes metabolic tissue loss. Dietary control of the disease requires a fairly palatable diet, despite protein restriction, and very digestible, in order to reduce the catabolic state. These general recommendations supplement dietary nutrient modifications, for example, proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates.

In chronic liver disease, an alteration in protein metabolism occurs and a reduction in albumin synthesis, which corresponds to 60% of the total plasma protein, which can lead to ascites and edema.

The liver plays an important role in the degradation of proteins from the diet and in the deamination of some amino acids. Some aromatic amino acids, such as tyrosine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan, are generally removed from the portal circulation and metabolized by the liver; With liver disease, those amino acids accumulate in the circulation. Veterinary Hepatic Balance – HE has 14% protein and its source is of vegetable origin, which helps protein metabolism without exceeding the capacity of the liver.

Dietary therapy should provide sufficient protein to support liver regeneration, repair, and maintenance, minimizing nitrogenou s products resulting from protein catabolism.

Blood glucose can be maintained with 1⁄4 of the liver’s functional capacity, but declining glucose circulation (hypoglycemia) can occur in cases of cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver malignancy. The Diet Balance Veterinary Hepatic – HE has in its formulation a highly digestible carbohydrate, rice, which is also very appetizing.

The liver is very important in lipid metabolism, where fatty acids are synthesized and stored as triglycerides. When liver glycogen is reduced, fatty acids are mobilized from adipose tissue, and then oxidized by the liver. Carnitine is a necessary cofactor for the transport of fatty acids from the cytoplasm to the mitochondria, and the liver is important in the metabolism of carnitine. Veterinary Hepatic Balance – HE is composed of L-Carnitine and the ideal content of Ethereal Extract to increase energy density and thus ensure adequate intake of nutrients in smaller portions and sufficient amounts of food.

Vitamin and mineral deficiency may occur related to liver disease, as a consequence of the association of poor food intake, reduced intestinal absorption and increased needs resulting from catabolism and liver regeneration. That is why Equilibrio Veterinary Hepatic – HE contains a vitamin complex with a high content of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K and B Complex that helps in storage and absorption.

Minerals like iron, copper, and zinc are stored in the liver. The accumulation of copper can cause further liver damage and can occur both due to defects in copper metabolism and as a result of decreased copper excretion. In liver disease, the accumulation of Cu in hepatocytes is likely due to inadequate excretion in bile, with consequent poisoning and worsening liver disease. Zinc can reduce the intestinal absorption of copper by competition between ions and influence the synthesis of metallothionein, a copper-binding protein that binds to intestinal copper by excreting it in bile and reducing its absorption. Zinc deficiency can produce and the magnesium concentration can also be decreased in cases of cirrhosis. Balance Veterinary Hepatic HE contains low copper content and adequate concentrations of chelated zinc, reducing the risks of copper poisoning.

The ideal level of metabolizable energy, which provides adequate caloric intake, is an important aspect to be considered in animals with liver disorders.

Clinical Considerations

Cardiomyopathy is the term we use to describe heart disease. There are various types of heart disease, the 3 most important being: dilated cardiomyopathy, restrictive cardiomyopathy, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Heart disease has various states, being that the diet can vary according to the moment in which the animal is.

According to the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and the International Small Animal Cardiac Health Council, the functional classifications of congestive heart failure in dogs are:

A – Patients at risk of developing heart failure, but no apparent structural cardiac abnormality identified.
B – Obvious cardiac structural abnormality (example: murmur), but without clinical signs of heart failure.
B1 – Asymptomatic patients, with no signs of cardiac remodeling on echocardiography and chest radiography.
B2 – Asymptomatic patients, with signs of cardiac remodeling on echocardiography and chest radiography.
C – Patients with signs of congestive heart failure associated with cardiac structural abnormality.
D – Patients with advanced heart disease and congestive heart failure refractory to usual therapy.

The product Balance Veterinary Cardiac Dogs – CA contains in its composition ingredients that help in heart disease.

Low Sodium: Helps control clinical signs associated with hypertension or sodium and fluid retention (ascites/edema).

Taurine: aids in cardiac contractility and prevents myocyte hypertrophy.

Omega-3: helps in blood perfusion acting as an agent to improve circulation. Reduced production of cachetizing cytokines, improved appetite, and reduced arrhythmias.

Potassium is an important electrolyte to maintain cardiac function. The use of diuretics can lead to hypokalemia and worsen the cardiac picture, therefore the use of greater amounts of potassium in the diet helps in maintaining cardiac function. It is worth remembering that, although the use of diuretics causes loss of potassium through the urine, those treated with inhibitors of the enzyme that converts angiotensin will excrete less potassium.

Magnesium is important for some enzyme reactions. The exaggerated decrease in magnesium can cause the risk of arrhythmias and decreased heart contraction. The vitamins of the B complex and the magnesium in greater quantity help to replace the loss of these nutrients, in the case of the use of diuretics.

L-Carnitine is necessary to transport fats from long-chain fatty acids – CLFA in the mitochondria of the heart muscle. L-Carnitine supplementation promotes energy production by the myocardium.

Whey protein contains several bioactive components that can have a positive effect on cardiovascular health. Certain bioactive peptides can protect against hypertension by inhibiting the enzyme that converts angiotensin (ACE).

Clinical Considerations

Most urolithiasis symptoms are accompanied by struvite uroliths (magnesium ammonium phosphate). The most important difference in urolithiasis symptoms between dogs and cats is that most of the infections in cats are not accompanied by urinary tract infection; while the infection is common in dogs.

Struvite stone formation requires some conditions, for example, sufficient concentrations of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate. The control of the struvite activity products (SAP) system collaborates in the dissolution of stones and in the prevention of recurrences.

It has been suggested that due to the fact that dogs excrete urine more concentrated in urea, the species would be more susceptible to urolithiasis due to infected struvite, due to the conversion of urea to ammonia; one of the structural components of the stone and responsible for the increase in urinary pH. A diet that produces urine with a pH between 6.4 and 6.6 is recommended.

Nutritional management for the dissolution of struvite stones is based on the use of a set of nutrients.

The Food Balance Veterinary Urinary Dogs – UR has a low protein level (18%), however in sufficient quantity and of high quality. The intention of protein restriction is to decrease urinary urea, an important substrate for urease positive bacteria, and for the production of ammonia. In addition, the protocol to reduce the risk of recurrence includes the prevention of urinary tract infection through diet, which must have ingredients that produce slightly acidic urine, and that reduces the structural components of the struvite stone, such as magnesium and phosphorous, in addition to protein.

In bacterial cystitis, consider pharmacological treatment before the start of the diet.

Another significant factor is the control of ingested water, which can vary considerably depending on the conditions and the type of diet. Adequate sodium levels can contribute to the increased degree of water consumption and subsequent urine production.

Clinical Considerations

Gastrointestinal diseases can be alleviated through dietary management, which can influence absorption, motility, microbiota, and correct nutritional deficiencies. Many affected patients can develop malnutrition symptoms resulting from the organism’s inability to carry out its normal functions.

The inclusion of specific ingredients in the food is recommended to aid in the recovery of dogs with gastrointestinal disturbances, as they will act to compensate for the loss of functional capacity of this system.

Nutritional intervention is an important aspect to achieve recovery success, along with pharmacological therapy.

– High absorption protein: The diseased gastrointestinal tract impairs the absorption of nutrients, which can aggravate the condition and lead to malnutrition. The presence of highly absorbable and digestible soy protein is essential for the recovery of the gastrointestinal system.

– Ideal level of ME: The metabolizable energy is inversely proportional to the quantity of food that must be supplied. The immediate nutritional management of an acute gastrointestinal disease usually consists of reducing the amount of food, with the intention of contributing to gastric rest. For this reason, Balance Veterinary Intestinal has ideal metabolizable energy.

– FOS and MOS: prebiotics are capable of promoting intestinal health.

FOS, in the small intestine, is resistant to the action of intestinal and pancreatic enzymes, which gives it an osmotic effect due to its water-holding capacity. MOS, derived from the yeast wall, modulates the immune system and the gut microbiota.

– Glutamine: an amino acid that works as a nutritional agent in gastrointestinal disturbances. In addition to protecting the intestine and stomach, it provides energy for the enterocytes, while preventing mucosal atrophy and reducing the risks of bacterial translocation.

Clinical Considerations

Allergic dermatitis is a very specific and increasingly common condition. Balance Veterinary Hypoallergenic Dogs – HA contains hydrolyzed protein in its composition, which is an excellent hypoallergenic protein source, due to its low molecular weight. The decrease in the molecular weight of proteins, measured in colorblind, decreases their allergenic power. Decreasing the size of the proteins reduces the probability of an allergic reaction and at the same time increases digestibility, which reduces their permanence in the intestine, allowing little time for the development of allergic reactions and/or intolerances. Furthermore, soy hydrolyzate contains an excellent biological value. Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Nicotinamide, Pyridoxine, and Choline increase the synthesis of ceramides, improving the effectiveness of the epidermal barrier.

PREBIOTIC

The fruit-oligosaccharides (FOS), found in inulin and in the beet pulp, are used by the intestinal microbiota. They stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria by inhibiting the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria and promoting digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) are extracted from the yeast walls. As well as FOS, they will stimulate the growth of the beneficial intestinal microbiota and inhibit the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria, favoring the digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Balance Veterinary Hypoallergenic Dogs – HA contains the perfect combination of Probiotics and Prebiotics, which help in the health of the digestive system, optimizing the absorption of nutrients essential for the health of the animal.

Trans-chelated vitamins and minerals are extremely important for good development and vitality. In adequate and balanced amounts, they contribute to maintaining the animal’s health.

Chelated Minerals: they are minerals linked to an amino acid and are ready to be absorbed by the body, being fully used; in this way, its effects are much better when compared to common minerals.

Antioxidant Complex: Vitamin E, Selenium, Vitamin C and beta carotene are powerful cellular antioxidants that help fight free radicals.

Omega-3 and Omega-6: they act in the inflammatory process, they carry out primary functions in cell membranes, contributing to the integrity and restoration of skin health.

Clinical Considerations

Obesity is the most prevalent nutritional disease in veterinary clinics, characterized by a positive energy balance condition, in which consumption exceeds expenditure, with lipid reserve stored in the form of triglycerides in adipose tissue and various deleterious effects for health. Its etiology is multifactorial and includes inadequate diet such as homemade food and snacks in excess, genetic factors, sedentary lifestyle, castration, endocrinopathies (hyperadrenocorticism, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus), use of glucocorticoids, progestagens, anticonvulsants, etc.

There are 2 types of obesity: Hypertrophic and Hyperplastic, being that hypertrophic obesity is characterized by an increase in the size of adipocytes, and hyperplastic obesity is characterized by an increase in the number and size of adipocytes.

It is important to assess whether the animal is overweight, obese, or pronounced obese. Overweight is when the animal is 1% to 14% above the ideal weight; obese, 15% to 30% above the ideal weight, in pronounced obesity the animal should be above 30%. Overweight animals can consume Equilibrio Light, but in the case of obesity and pronounced obesity, the ideal food is Equilibrio Veterinary Obesity & Diabetic Dogs – O&D.

Balance Veterinary Obesity & Diabetic Dogs – O&D presents in its composition low energy content, which helps in the control of excess body fat; high content of soluble fibers (beet pulp and inulin) and insoluble fibers (cellulose powder and psyllium) promoting animal satiety, thus reducing calorie consumption and maintaining the health of the gastrointestinal tract. Soluble fibers slow down gastric emptying and control nutrient absorption. Insoluble fibers increase the volume of food and speed up gastrointestinal transit.

30% protein is considered ideal for maintaining lean mass.

The high concentration of L-carnitine in the product Balance Veterinary Obesity & Diabetic Dogs – O&D accelerates fat burning and also helps maintain lean mass.

The use of natural antioxidants, such as Vitamin E, C, D, and beta carotene, fights free radicals, and prevents early cell aging.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids help reduce serum triglyceride levels and increase insulin sensitivity.

The mineral chromium is very important for diabetic animals, as it is considered a facilitator for the entry of glucose into the cell and thus regulates glycemic indexes.
