Surgical Management of a Penetrating Soft-Tissue Injury Caused by an Embedded Improvised Dart

A “Pana” Injury That Required Surgical Removal

Penetrating injuries caused by improvised projectiles can produce considerably more tissue damage than what is visible at the skin surface. In this case, a locally known “pana” became deeply embedded in the dog’s soft tissues and required controlled surgical removal.

Because the projectile had penetrated beneath the skin, simple external pulling could have caused further tearing, bleeding, contamination, or damage to nearby vessels, nerves, and muscles. The patient therefore underwent careful examination and surgical exploration to determine the direction and depth of penetration and to safely access the embedded object.

During the procedure, the improvised dart was carefully disengaged and completely removed. The wound tract was assessed for devitalized tissue and contamination, followed by appropriate cleaning, debridement, and wound management to reduce the risk of infection and support tissue healing.

The patient remained stable following the procedure and continued to show progressive recovery during postoperative monitoring.

This case highlights the serious consequences of penetrating projectile injuries. Even when the external wound appears small, deeper structures may be affected, and retained foreign material can lead to infection, tissue necrosis, persistent pain, or delayed healing.

A “pana” does not simply fall into an animal’s body. Its presence raises serious concern for deliberate or reckless harm. Pet owners and communities should remain vigilant and seek immediate veterinary attention when an animal is found with a puncture wound, unexplained bleeding, localized swelling, pain, or an embedded object.
